With Memorial Day past, it’s time to focus on the summer trends. Some trends are newer to 2021, while many have resurfaced from the early 2000’s. The best thing with fashion is that everyone has a different take on the trends and can really make it their own. I asked you guys on my Instagram to tell me some of the trends you have been seeing (good or bad) so I can give my take on them; do I love it or leave it? I narrowed it down to three trends I am really into this year, and three that I can definitely go without (while also providing some great alternatives 🙂 ).
LOVE IT
Terry Cloth
Terry cloth vibes is pure nostalgia for me. Nothing was better than stunting on your third-grade classmates and showing up wearing the complete terry cloth fit at the summer pool party. I am so happy this trend is back! Terry cloth sets, rompers, and dresses are perfect for a pool or beach day. May I add they are also so practical and serve a dual purpose: fashion and function. I will definitely be grabbing some terry cloth pieces for the summer. It’s a love it from me!
Matching Sets
I have always will always be a gal who loves a good deal. Matching sets make my wallet and heart so happy. The great thing about wearing sets is that you don’t need to think when trying to put an outfit together- all you need is to pick out some shoes and accessories and you have a complete look. You can also pair the top or bottoms from the set with other pieces of clothing, getting more looks from the set, and more bang for your buck
Shoulder and Bucket Bags
I have spoken about some bag trends earlier in the blog, and shoulder and bucket bags are definitely still on my radar. While I love a good cross body, having a smaller back for nights out is a huge trend right now and I am all for it. I have noticed that a lot of designers have gone back to some of their early 2000’s styled bags and have revamped them to make them a bit more modern.
My thoughts: While these pieces are on the trendier side, I would recommend buying some fun shoulder bags that are on the cheaper side. I’ll definitely be buying one or two different colored ones and know I don’t want to spend too much on them as other bags will be more practical for on-the-go activities or during the day.
LEAVE IT
Lilly Pulitzer
Now don’t get me wrong, I had my fair share of Lilly Pulitzer. My summer wardrobe in high school was filled with it. While I still think that Lilly will never go out of style, there is definitely a time and place to bust out your newer Lilly pieces. In the past few years, there has been a switch in the colors and patterns, being a bit too neon and bright for my classic Lilly taste. I would recommend cutting down your Lilly pieces to one skort, and one dress; bonus if you can find your hands on vintage/older Lilly.
Swap it with: If you have a vintage or older piece of Lilly, keep it! You don’t want to wear the newer busy pieces all summer, because lets face it, it will get real old real fast. My advice would be to cut your LP wardrobe down to only a few pieces and pair them with some neutral tops and shoes. Find a way to tone down the brighter patterns and you will be able to get away with wearing it more than once a summer!
Bermuda Shorts
I’m sorry but the people who are trying to bring back Bermuda shorts, THERE’S THE DOOR. There is simply nothing flattering or cute about Bermuda shorts. I have done my research and seen these wretched denim don’ts on a ton of different body types. There is just something about where it hits on the leg that shortens them and can make even a daddy long leg look stubby. The verdict is, we are leaving this attempt of a trending the dust.
Swap it with: I am one who doesn’t like short shorts, and want this piece of clothing to do its job and cover the bum. That being said I would recommend a mid-length short that hits around mid-thigh. This still provides coverage and comfort, but hits the leg at a more flattering length.
Low Rise Jeans
This comeback trend also has to be some sort of sick joke. We have come such a long way with finding and loving mid to high-rise jeans. I couldn’t think of anything more uncomfortable than having to constantly adjust these pants and worry about sucking in at all times. Let’s all agree to leave this trend back in 2005.
Swap it with: If you are into the low rise styles, I would recommend going for a maxi/midi skirt. These will provide comfort since they have more stretch than denim and can be worn low-rise or have it sit right at the waist line. Much more versatile than low-rise denim and way more fitting for the current trends.
